Going to the market is not the same in Campo de Ourique, one of the oldest ones in Lisboa. Opened in 1934 and refurbished in 2013 with a contemporary look and feel it was inspired by the Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid. Lisbon City Hall realized the project combining a local market with private entrepreneurs mixing tradition with taste.
The local vendors offer your fresh daily products like fish, vegetables, cheese, meat and you can also find wine, canned delicacies like the famous Portuguese sardines, honey, nuts, etc.
Of course the whole idea is to be able to savour and enjoy the food at the little restaurants scattered inside the hall. You can order some food from sandwiches to sushi, from gourmet burgers to risotto. There is for all budget and for all taste whether vegetarian or carnivore.
Everything can be consumed on the spot in the central area where tables are set.
Of course to accompany your meal you have a choice of drinks like fresh juice, coffee, wine, and even champagne.
To finish you could taste traditional pastries and deserts.
The market is very busy all day, for breakfast, lunch or dinner and even at the weekends there is live music to accompany your meal.
And newly opened is the handicraft stall at the bazaar corner.
They also organise events such as the Gin and tonic workshop, live music, cooking competitions, etc.
And they even have their own facebook page so you can be up to date.
So next time you are at the terminus of Tram 28 at Prazeres, walk up the street and come and discover this charming market to experience a real taste of Portugal.
